It’s been a busy year for Paul VI Catholic High School’s music program. In addition to a Star Wars-inspired winter concert and a strings ensemble performance at the Volunteer Fairfax Awards Gala in April, the program looks forward to entertaining runners in the Army 10-miler race in October.
In 1998, four families came up with an idea that would signify a paramount shift in special education at PVI and beyond. Recognizing a need for inclusive secondary education for students with intellectual disabilities, several families came together to form what would eventually become the Options program at PVI.
In March, College Board launched the updated version of the SAT, making several changes to the traditional standardized test high school students have come to know. The first wave of PVI students have taken this new test and have reported back to Panther Press on what this updated version is like.
May 1st, the infamous final deadline for college decisions, is quickly approaching. For some seniors, this comes as immense relief. After months and months of applications, writing essays, alumni interviews, and campus tours, the wait will be over and their futures will be decided for the next few years. For those who have not yet made their decision, or are struggling to decide between two top contenders, these next few days will be stressful and frustrating. And as for the lucky few who applied early decision and heard back in December, they will get to sit back and watch their friends suffer in relative sympathy.
This week, April 18-22, the PVI Spanish Honor Society is selling pulseras (Spanish for “bracelets”) for five dollars in the cafeteria during lunch. The proceeds from these colorful, handcrafted bracelets go to the Pulsera Project, a nonprofit that provides support to a variety of charitable organizations.
‘Emma!,’ premiering Friday, April 8 at 7:30 p.m., with additional performances Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon, is a story that many describe as a musical version of the popular teen romance movie, ‘Clueless,’ about a girl named Cher who plays matchmaker at her school in trying to bring two of her teachers together.
Looking over past PVI fall sports schedules, you’ll find a number of popular student athlete programs, like soccer, football, and cross country. One that you won’t find? Field hockey.
A group of PVI students are trying to change that, led by sophomore Margaret McConville ‘18 who is working to establish a club team at PVI. This club will serve as the predecessor to an official team that will be formed once the school moves to Loudoun County in 2020.
On March 11, PVI students enrolled in AP Physics had the opportunity to visit the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Students toured NanoFab, the nanotechnology fabrication branch of the institution, and attended talks given by high-level scientists at NIST on topics ranging from how to get into science as a career, to atomic clocks.
PVI’s Landon Labuskes ‘17 has accomplished a feat shared by only twelve students in the world: a perfect score on the AP Calculus AB exam. Although an impressive accomplishment for anyone, Landon was a fourteen-year-old sophomore when he took the exam and received the perfect score.
Don’t let the name “Coffee Cake” fool you, there is no coffee taste to it. It is a mix of snickerdoodle and sunshine. It is a tradition that has been passed down through generations of my mother’s family, and now I am passing it onto you. I hope you find as much comfort in it as I have.
