ACH: PVI Seniors Find Time to Pursue their Passions

The second semester of senior year can be a taxing time for students. At Paul VI Catholic High School in Fairfax, many seniors are deeply involved in afterschool activities, whether they play a varsity sport, act in a PVI Players’ production or flaunt their school spirit in the “VI Man” student section. What their peers may not know is that many seniors also devote themselves to extracurricular passions outside of school while still keeping up with difficult course loads.

PVI Seniors Prep for the Primary

On Tuesday, March 1, Virginia will hold its presidential primary, giving many PVI seniors the opportunity to vote for the first time. Despite many students expressing a general dissatisfaction with the pool of candidates, most seniors interviewed said they do intend to vote in the Virginia primary.

PVI’s King Named McDonald’s All-American

PVI senior student and varsity basketball player, VJ King, has received a prestigious honor in the world of sports: a spot on the 2016 McDonald’s All-American Team. To be placed on the team, a student athlete must receive a nomination and out of the over eight hundred nominations, only twenty four players in the United States are selected for placement on either the East or West regional teams. King is the first athlete from PVI to receive this award.

In Book or Movie, ‘The Martian’ Soars

Andy Weir’s debut novel, The Martian, began humbly as a serialized story on Weir’s personal website, but since then it has taken off astronomically (pun intended). Many who read the novel on the website requested that Weir put his story on Amazon, and he acquiesced, setting the novel at the lowest possible price. Then, as the book became extremely popular, climbing Amazon’s sci-fi charts, a publisher approached Weir, and soon, movie rights were purchased. Now, the film has been nominated for seven Academy Awards, a perfect end to the rags-to-riches story.

ACH: Paul VI Student Trailblazes a New Program

Hannah Fulop, a senior at Paul VI Catholic High School in Fairfax, is the first student to take advantage of the school’s new Directed Independent Study (DIS) program. Under the guidance of science teachers Michael Potter and Eileen Liberti, Fulop is culturing and growing fruit fly cells without instructions and using lab procedures she’s designed herself.

Study Tips for a Successful Semester

You know the drill, especially if you’re in a bunch of honors or AP classes. You get out of school, go to after school activities or practice for a few hours, get home, eat dinner, procrastinate, and finally start your four or more hours of homework really late. I do know a few people who regularly finish their work before nine every night and I don’t understand how they do it, but I have been finding some useful ways to become more efficient while studying. Try a few of these tips on your own. You may find them useful!

PVI Students Help Change Lives on Mission

Mission trips are one way PVI students can encounter God’s heart and the hearts of people all around the world. A popular recurring trip has been to Banica, Dominican Republic, a small community on the border of Haiti, where a group of roughly 40 students are sent to help meet the needs of approximately 10,000 residents who struggle from day-to-day. This year’s trip will take place during summer break, from June 18-24.

Q&A: PVI Freshman Reflects on Girls Varsity Soccer Season

Along with basketball and football, soccer is one of the biggest sports at PVI. The girls varsity soccer team did well throughout their season. Although the team did not come out on top in the playoffs, the team finished the fall season with four wins, three losses, and three ties.

Recently, starting goalie Gretchen Bennett ‘19, was interviewed about her experience as a first-year player on the team this past season, and what the team looks forward to improving next year.

Planned Changes Underway for PVI’s Move to Loudoun

PVI’s planned move to Loudoun County in 2020 still seems far away for most students, but with next year’s freshman class anticipated to be the first group of students directly affected by the relocation, plans are well underway for expected new features at the Loudoun campus.

Who Even is Sadie Hawkins?

So by now you may have heard that PVI is hosting its first ever Sadie Hawkins dance. A Sadie Hawkins dance, for those of you who do not know, is a dance where the girls have to ask the guys. Finally, all the girls will know the agony our boys go through every Prom and Homecoming season by having to come up with a creative and cute way to ask someone.
